Two troopers honored in Albany for daring 2013 fire rescue

Two Alexandria Bay state troopers were honored with the Brummer Award — the highest award for heroism — during the state police’s 38th annual Awards Day ceremony Wednesday morning in Albany.

Nichole K. Turck and Scott D. Whitmore received the prestigious award, which has been presented 96 times since its inception in 1968, for saving an elderly couple from a fast-spreading house fire last April.

The early morning fire on April 2, 2013, consumed the town of Orleans home of Richard J. and Phyllis D. Kennell, then both 85, of 38150 County Route 13, but through the actions of the two troopers, both survived.

When Ms. Turck and Mr. Whitmore arrived on the scene about 1 a.m., the barn on the property was engulfed and the fire had begun to spread to the Kennells’ residence, state police said. The two immediately went to the residence and knocked on the windows, waking up Mr. Kennell, who was led from the house safely.

When the troopers learned that Mrs. Kennell, who was partially disabled, was still inside, they entered the burning residence, found Mrs. Kennell and carried her to safety.

The two also were honored at the 48th annual Law and Order Night awards held April 29 at Army & Navy American Legion Post 61 in Watertown.

In addition to the American Legion awards, Mr. Whitmore and Ms. Turck were issued special citations at the dinner by state Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton; Assemblywoman Addie J. Russell, D-Theresa; Assemblyman Kenneth D. Blankenbush, R-Black River, and the Jefferson County administrator’s office.
