BALMAT Several people are interested in the purchase of the closed Fowler Elementary School.
We do have individuals seriously looking at the school, Gouverneur Central School Superintendent Lauren F. French said. We have two entities and multiple visits. We have had three tours and are looking at a fourth. Well hopefully know more by the end of the week.
The school board closed Fowler Elementary in 2013 because of declining enrollment and put it on the market.
Brian H. Murray, Washington Street Properties, Watertown, who had considered the building as a rental for the state Office of Mental Health, withdrew his purchase offer of $300,000 earlier this year. OMH is reviewing other locations, Mrs. French said.
The potential use of the building by the other prospective buyers is not certain.
Id love to have something beneficial for the community, she said.
Fowler Elementary is relatively small, was well maintained, is all on one level and is free of asbestos, making it more marketable than many other former school buildings, Mrs. French said.
