Norquist portrays race with lies

Everything you need to know about Grover Norquist’s credibility as a political operative is summed up in the first sentence of a news release he issued Tuesday about the race in New York state’s 21st Congressional District.

Elise M. Stefanik said Monday that she would not sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge drafted by Mr. Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform group. She said that she would make her pledges directly to north country residents, not a Washington lobbyist.

And as expected, Mr. Norquist responded by criticizing Ms. Stefanik’s decision to ignore him. Here is how he began his news release:

“After weeks of ducking the media and New York taxpayers, Elise Stefanik confirmed yesterday that she is open to higher taxes by announcing her refusal to sign the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. Stefanik hopes to join the paltry 6 percent of House Republicans leaving the door open to higher taxes.”

No candidate in this race has been more visible or made public and media access a higher priority than has Ms. Stefanik. She has been campaigning for months and seems to have visited every part of the district at least once so far.

Is Mr. Norquist so woefully out of touch with the 21st Congressional District that he has no clue about how the candidates are running their respective campaigns? Or did he merely choose to lie about Ms. Stefanik’s actions and hope no one in the north country would notice?

In either case, this tax reformer is unable to convey the truth about this congressional race in Northern New York. So with Mr. Norquist’s reputation slipping into rigor mortis, why should anyone give this ideological dinosaur a second thought?
