WATERTOWN — WPBS’s character breakfast and 18th annual Ready, Set, Fun Bookfest! will take place Saturday.

From 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday at Elks Lodge 496, Bradley Street, children and their families can eat breakfast and have their pictures taken with their favorite PBS characters. The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children ages 1 to 12. Infants come free.

After breakfast, all are invited to the annual bookfest, which aims to promote early literacy, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bruce M. Wright Memorial Conference Center, 1291 Faichney Drive. Both events are open to the public.

Characters Daniel Tiger, Cat in the Hat, Clifford and Buddy the Dinosaur will appear, along with guest storyteller Regi Carpenter. Local authors will be on hand.

Each family will receive a free new book. There will be a gently used book swap, a Scholastic Book Fair and a fashion show featuring the Urban Mission.

According to WPBS’s website, admission to the bookfest is a donation of a canned good or nonperishable food item. The food collection, which typically gathers upwards of 1,000 pounds, will be donated to the food pantry at the Urban Mission, 247 Factory St.

The bookfest is sponsored in part by Jefferson Dental, Martin’s Point Healthcare, Stewart’s Shops and New York Air Brake.
