CROGHAN — Anyone who’s perused YouTube has likely been inundated with flash mob videos performed to Pharell Williams’s “Happy.” Pretty soon, Croghan locals hope to post a similar video filmed outside the American Maple Museum, 9753 Main St.

“We’re trying to pull off a flash mob for the simple fact that everybody’s doing it in their communities. We would like to have participation,” said Julie Lyndaker, event organizer.

A flash mob sees a large group of people together in a public place dancing either freestyle or choreographed. Ms. Lyndaker and partner Dawn Ashline hope to have the group perform a line dance. The tutorial for the dance is on YouTube under “Happy Line Dance” by Valonda Calloway.

“I’ve watched every flash mob to this song on YouTube and I think we can do better. We can put Croghan on the map and use the video for promotions for next year,” Ms. Lyndaker said. “I know we’ll never pull it off in unison, but if we can pull off a couple moves and then freestyle dance, I’ll be happy.” Videographer Jeremy T. Graves of Carthage is expected to tape the event.

The flash mob will take place just after the noon fire whistle Saturday during the inaugural Spring Break in Croghan.

Spring Break in Croghan was organized by the duo as a way to get people out of the house following the long winter.

“If you’re passing through Croghan that day, use caution,” Ms. Lyndaker said.

Spring Break is expected to run along Main Street starting at 10 a.m., with no designated end time. The street festival will include vendors, popcorn, fried dough, a chicken barbecue, fundraiser bake sales and several performances, including Good Golly, formerly the Burglars. Croghan Library will be open with face painting and a story hour at 11 a.m.

A full list of events is available on Facebook under “Spring Break in Croghan.”

“We started out as wanting something small where everyone can get together and have fun and fellowship; get together like the Croghan Lumberjack Festival,” Ms. Ashline said. The Croghan Lumberjack Festival formerly was held the second week of June, before being canceled in 2003 because of a lack of community interest.

“It got bigger than we ever intended,” Ms. Lyndaker said.

Should the weather force a cancellation, it will be announced on the group’s Facebook page.
