CARTHAGE — The academic leaders for the class of 2014 at Carthage Central School are Claire Louise Sauter, valedictorian, and Jacob Anneler Zehr, salutatorian.

Miss Sauter, daughter of Thomas and Grace Sauter, Carthage, has an academic average of 99.24. She is a member of National Honor Society and Key Club and president of the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) Club.

She has volunteered at the Jefferson County SPCA at Petco, Watertown, and served as ambassador in 2012 and junior facilitator in 2013 for the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Organization. She is a player and volunteer for the Carthage and Patriots lacrosse clubs.

Miss Sauter is involved in the youth group at North Country Fellowship Church. She has taken drawing and painting classes for all four years of high school and won first place in the Scholastic Art Show. She was featured as a Channel 7 News Academic All Star, an Elks Youth of the Month and a Carthage High School Student of the Month.

Miss Sauter also has been a League All-Star for the varsity swim, volleyball and lacrosse teams.

She will study at St. John Fisher College, Rochester.

Mr. Zehr, son of Marvin and Linda Zehr, Carthage, has an academic average of 98.63. He is captain of the varsity soccer team and section leader for high school choir, band and select singers. He participated in jazz band throughout high school and is a member of National Honor Society, Whiz Quiz and Math League.

He has been involved with his church youth group for four years, played in the band on the worship team, assisted teaching at vacation Bible school and volunteered for the Staten Island Mennonite Disaster Service Work Project, helping to recover the area from Hurricane Sandy. He has been a lifeguard and counselor at Beaver Camp for two summers and was a substitute pianist at the United Church of Christ.

Mr. Zehr was a Channel 7 News Arts All-Star and was named an Elks Student of the Month. He placed third on the piano in the James and Katherine Andrews Young Artists Competition, received a perfect score on three New York State School Music Association solos and achieved NYSSMA Area All-State for band and choir, as well as several other musical awards.

During his sophomore and junior years, he received the Advanced Placement Scholar Award.

Mr. Zehr will study music education and performance at Goshen (Ind.) College.
