SLC, C-P softball teams surge to NAC East wins

The St. Lawrence Central and Colton-Pierrepont varsity softball teams surged their way to NAC East Division wins on Friday.

SLC 13, Norwood-Norfolk 1: At Norfolk, the Lady Larries jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and senior Lindsey Thayer made sure it was more than enough for the win, striking out 14 and limiting the Lady Flyers (7-4, 6-4) to just two hits.

Thayer also drilled a pair of doubles in a 4-5 outing at the plate Chelsea Savage went 3-5 with two doubles. Hailee Weegar stroked three singles while Haleigh Agans and Bailee Gauthier each singled twice. Natash Barnhart also hit safely for the undefeated Lady Larries (10-, 8-0), who are ranked second in the state’s Class C pool.

Kirstin Barkley and Katrina Grant (double) accounted for the Flyers’ hit while Bryanna Powell was tagged with the loss.

C-P 17, Madrid-Waddington 7: At Swift Field in South Colton, the Lady Colts made a strong recovery from a twinbill sweep to SLC in their previous outing, working their way to a 10-5 lead before breaking the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Sabrina Johnson (6K, 2BB, 8H) went the distance for the win while Desiree Pryce (1K, 2BB) took the loss.

Junior Eve Whalen continued to swing a productive bat for C-P, going 3-4 with a double, triple and three runs scored. Morgan Burns was 3-4 with a triple and three runs scored. Morgan Doyle had two hits, including a three-run homerun. Also contributing offensively were Kathryn Miller (2-5, run scored), Hannah Hogle (2-3, 2 runs scored), Andrea Aldous (single, 2 runs scored), Kelsi Gilbert (single, 3 runs scored) and Makayla Reed (single, 2 runs scored.

Blake Orosz went 3-4 with a triple and three runs scored in the losing cause. Mariah Patenaude was 2-4 with a solo homerun. Pryce and Brittani Dawley both singled and scored a run while Bailey doubled.

In the other East Division softball matchups on Friday, Chateaugay outscored St. Regis Falls 13-6 and Tupper Lake hosted Parishville-Hopkinton while a pair of Central Division encounters saw Gouverneur beat Salmon River 12-2 and OFA held off Canton 6-4.

Gouverneur 12, Salmon River 2: Playing their fifth game this week took its toll on the Salmon River girls, as Gouverneur jumped in front 6-0 with a five-run second inning. The Wildcats tacked on four more runs in the fourth and added a solo run in the fifth to hold an 11-0 cushion.

The Shamrocks got on the board in the sixth, scoring their two runs, but the ’Cats capped the scoring with the game’s final run in the top of the seventh.

Makenzie Rowe opened the game in the circle for Gouverneur and gave way to sister Alexis in the sixth. The duo combined for 11 strikeouts, one walk and allowed just three hits.

Danielle Bullock paced the Wildcats with a 4-for-4 game at the plate, smacking a pair of doubles and driving in a run. Katie Andrews and Brooke Shattuck had two hits each for Gouverneur.

Melanie Taylor suffered the setback for SRC, striking out two, but had control issues in walking 10 batters. Taylor doubled in a run, while Brittany Brooks and Taylor Armstrong had the other two hits.
