WATERTOWN The Jefferson County Board of Legislators passed a resolution Tuesday encouraging residents to register as organ donors.
According to County Clerk Gizelle J. Meeks, the percentage of New York residents who have signed up to donate their organs is well below the national average.
Approximately 10,000 New Yorkers are waiting for a transplant and more than 600 die each year because of the shortage, Ms. Meeks said.
Those interested in registering as donors are encouraged to visit the state Department of Motor Vehicles office in the Jefferson County Office Building, 175 Arsenal St., call the office at 785-3023 or visit www.donatelifeny.org. Interested residents do not have to wait until it is time to renew their drivers licenses to register, Ms. Meeks said.
