New fund to be called The Frederic Remington Art Museum Fund

The Frederic Remington Art Museum and the Northern New York Community Foundation are very pleased to announce a new partnership that will further the missions of both of these important local institutions.

Mary Colton of Canton, has generously given the museum an initial major gift to establish a new account for the museum’s benefit, managed by the Northern New York Community Foundation. As a long-time supporter of both the Foundation and the museum, it is most fitting that the initial gift comes from her.

The new fund is called “The Frederic Remington Art Museum Fund.” While the museum already has a foundation that manages its endowment holdings, the new fund at the Northern New York Community Foundation will grow separately. It is a permanent fund, which will disburse 4% of its value annually, creating a new revenue stream to benefit the museum’s operations.

For the Frederic Remington Art Museum, the partnership with the Northern New York Community Foundation provides new opportunities for the Foundation to nurture gifts to the fund. The Foundation’s work in advising donors about giving in the North Country will build financial support from sources that might not otherwise be reached.

“We are very excited to partner with such a worthy institution as the Northern New York Community Foundation,” says museum director Laura A. Foster. “Now donors in the tri-county area who wish to support a cultural institution focused on art, education and history will have the museum on a menu of choices offered by the foundation. Without this partnership, these donors might not have thought of us as a place to make a difference for our wider community. It seems like a very natural fit.”

The Northern New York Community Foundation has a long history with the museum before this new partnership. The foundation supported the museum’s Capital Campaign in the late 1990s and more recently it provided generous support for the Centennial Campaign. Several of the museum’s friends have directed gifts to the museum through the foundation’s donor advised funds. Most recently, the foundation’s Youth Philanthropy Council chose the museum as the recipient of funds to buy art supplies for “Kid’s Place,” the museum’s education center.

“The Community Foundation currently administers permanent endowments for more than 40 organizations and schools in the tri-county area. We are honored to enter into a formal partnership with the Frederic Remington Art Museum. In our role as a donor-service organization, we continually strive to find ways to provide additional options for organizations and donors as they seek to support their passions and interests and have them stewarded in perpetuity,” says Community Foundation director Rande S. Richardson.
