COPENHAGEN — One streak had to end.

Copenhagen — the last undefeated Frontier League softball team remaining — tallied 14 hits and used a gem from junior Brooke Spaulding to capture a 10-1 victory over visiting LaFargeville on a warm and windy Friday.

The Golden Knights improved to 11-0 overall and 9-0 in the league, and snapped LaFargeville’s 19-game winning streak against “D” Division opponents that lasted almost two years.

“I think the main key is we’re coming into every game focused and ready to play each and every game like it could be our last, even though we’re in the middle of the season,” Spaulding said.

Copenhagen broke the game open with a six-run fourth inning.

It tallied seven hits and took advantage of a string of LaFargeville miscues in the frame, while sending 11 batters to the plate.

“I feel like our bats are really working well this year, we’re all hitting the ball,” said Copenhagen senior shortstop Alicia Evans.

Copenhagen coach John Cain added: “We’re really aggressive at the plate and we are free swingers. We swing at good pitches and I have some girls that can outright hit the cover off the ball if they make good contact.”

For the Golden Knights, it was their fifth straight league game with a double-digit run total. They’re averaging 11.9 runs scored per game.

Freshman Drew Baker did much of Copenhagen’s damage from the leadoff spot. She finished 3-for-4, all singles, and drove in three runs.

Lauren Graves provided a two-run single while Spaulding, Brianna Muncy, Hope Woodruff, and Nicole Gardner each supplied two hits.

“It was a big focus of ours coming into the season,” Cain said. “We had a lot of time in the gym, and we wore that (batting) cage and that pitching machine out… You name it. If it was a hitting drill, we did it.”

The Red Knights (6-4, 5-3) lost their second straight game after back-to-back wins over another division rival, Alexandria, to start the week.

The defending division champions get another crack at Copenhagen on Wednesday.

“We’ve got to look at ourselves in the mirror and decide if we’re going to take this loss and move forward, or are we going to roll over and die?” LaFargeville coach Danielle Shimel said.

“We have the ability and we can play well. It’s just the matter of putting it together for seven straight innings, and I know we can do that,” she added.

Spaulding surrendered just one hit — a single to LaFargeville junior Mackenzie Hilts – and finished with seven strikeouts in the complete game win.

“She’s not ever going to be the fastest pitcher in the league but she spots the ball pretty well,” Cain said. “She mixes in good change of speed pitches and she threw a little bit of a screwball today and that got some hitters out.”

The win keeps Copenhagen in the driver’s seat for the division title as they enter a tough stretch of games to close out the regular season.

In addition to the rematch with LaFargeville, The Golden Knights have to play Sandy Creek and South Lewis, and have a doubleheader scheduled with Alexandria.

“I think this builds a lot of confidence,” Evans said. “Now we need to see (Alexandria) ... We just want to keep this going and keep winning.”
