Massena softball falls to FA; Canton sweeps Potsdam


Massena Central fell at home to Franklin Academy while Potsdam Central was swept on the road by Canton Central in NAC Central Division varsity softball matchups on Monday.

FA 19, Massena 0: Anne Sharlow fanned four and walked none in tossing a three-hit shutout for the win. The trio of Vanessa Kirkey, Amber Thomas and Reaghan Peets pitched for Massena (3-4).

Janelle Heden led the winning offfense with two doubles and three runs scored. Sharlow aided her cause going 2-3 with three runs scored. Erin McDonald and Katie Lamica (double) contributed two hits and two runs scored each.

Katelynn Malone, Kelly Southwich and Kirkey had the Massena hits.

Canton 6-10, Potsdam 0-3: Chantel Rose smacked a triple and a single and Jennifer Wilcox connected for two singles leading Canton who produced nine hits in a 6-0 five inning win. Beth Pearson fanned nine batters and allowed a pair of hits. Ashley Mead also doubled in game one.

Meghan Oney and Kelsey Green produced hits for Potsdam.

In the nightcap, Pearson smacked a triple and a double in a 2-3 effort and pitched three innings allowing two hits, two runs with four strikeouts during the 10-3 win. Rose finished 2-3 with a double while Emily Dean collected two hits. Mead allowed just two hits in relief.

Green logged three of Potsdam’s four hits.

In the other Central Division games on Monday, Brushton-Moira blanked Salmon River 9-0 and OFA outscored Gouverneur 8-5.

B-M 9, Salmon River 0: BMC scored two runs in both the first and second innings, added a solo run in the fourth, then capped the team’s seventh league win of the season with two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings.

Emily O’Connor picked up the win in the circle for BMC, limiting the Shamrocks to just three singles to Taylor Armstrong, Melanie Taylor and losing pitcher Brittany Brooks, while striking out 11 SRC batters.

Melissa Cox lashed a double and drove in two runs to help the Panthers to victory, while O’Connor (RBI), Ashley DeBeer (RBI), Kenzie Traynor and Jenna Dufrane had two hits apiece.

Singles for BMC came from Mika Uehara, Arielle “AJ” Gary and Ally Hooker, who also drove in a run.


Madrid-Waddington won both games of the doubleheader against St. Regis Falls on Monday, taking the opener 15-4 and winning the nightcap 9-5. Both games were five innings.

Samanatha Dugan earned both wins in the circle for the Yellowjackets, while Madison Austen suffered the loss in the opener as Brooklyn Haverstock took the setback in game two.

Blake Orosz singled and homered, while Desiree Pryce sigled and doubled for M-W in game one, while Sadie Newcomb singled and tripled in the nightcap.

Kerrigan Rondeau singled and double, while Taryn Sheldon tripled for the lady Saints in the first game. Austen (RBI), Abby Duquette and Makensy Bazdaric (RBI) had a single each in the opener. Rondeau singled and double in the second game, while singles for SRF came from Hana Northrup and Harlie Gardner.
