WATERTOWN — A Watertown man was held without bail Tuesday at the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building after city police said he forged a woman’s name on a check and then attempted to cash it.

William P. Beecher Jr., 27, of 146 Winslow St., Lower Apt., was charged with second-degree forgery, a class D felony.

Police said Mr. Beecher wrote a check and signed the name of Harriet J. Come, of 156 Sterling St., Apt. 2. With completed check, Mr. Beecher attempted to withdraw $480 from her account at Carthage Savings and Loan, 146 Arsenal St.

He was arraigned in City Court and sent to the jail.
