New museum to open in Lyons Falls

LYONS FALLS — Seven seasonal Lewis County museums are gearing up for their opening day. And, in Lyons Falls, a new one has been established on Laura Street.

“It’s the Storms-Bailey Home Museum in honor of the three people who lived there,” Lyons Falls History Association member Shirley T. VanNest said.

The house at 6929 Laura St. was donated to the association last year by the Storms-Bailey family and has since been fixed up as a museum. Exhibits will include a military room with uniforms from a variety of wars, a 1930s and ’40s-style kitchen and memorabilia from the Storms-Bailey family, Gould Paper Mill and the Lyons Falls region.

“It’s going to be like an old house. We have the old kitchen stove — a wood stove — a Hoosier cabinet,” Mrs. VanNest said.

For now, only the first floor will be open for tours, although the hope is to have the second floor organized by next summer, according to Susan Hammecker, association secretary and treasurer.

The house was built in the late 1940s.

“We’re going to have the house open the morning of alumni weekend. Then we won’t open until the farmers market starts,” Mrs. VanNest said.

The Lyons Falls High School Alumni Association will hold its annual meeting and banquet there May 24; the museum will be open from 10 a.m. to noon.

The Lyons Falls Farmers Market at Riverside Park on Laura Street will open June 17. The museum will open for the season either that day or the following Tuesday. An opening ceremony is expected to be held that day, although details have not been finalized.

After that, the museum will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. every Tuesday throughout the summer. There will be no admission cost.

“Over Labor Day, we will do a blessing,” Mrs. VanNest said. “The whole family that gave us the house is coming.”

The association’s other museum in town, based out of the Falls Pharmacy, 6805 McAlpine St., will be open by appointment.
