St. Lawrence County honors senior volunteers


CANTON — The Rev. John L. Downs, Raymondville, was recognized by St. Lawrence County legislators as the county’s Senior of the Year at a ceremony Monday. He retired as a Catholic priest in 2004, but remains active in ministry. He is a member of Massena Senior Citizens Club and served as secretary of the county Council of Senior Citizens for seven years. He volunteers annually at the MayFest and the county senior picnic.

The Jacqueline Sears Volunteer of the Year award went to David A. Frary, Massena. Mr. Frary is the owner and operator of Phillips Funeral Home in Massena, Waddington and Madrid.

Mr. Frary has been chairman of Massena Housing Authority for 20 years, is treasurer for Veterans Memorial Park and is a board member of Massena Savings & Loan and of Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley. He is active in the Massena Rotary Club, Knights of Columbus and Elks Club.

Shirley Meek, Oswegatchie, received the Outstanding Contribution by a Senior Citizen Award. She is active with the Clifton-Fine Senior Club, Oswegatchie Cemetery Association, Clifton-Fine Hospital Auxiliary and Fine Home Bureau.
