Pierrepont takes down aging highway department barn

PIERREPONT — After years of use by Pierrepont’s highway department, the old town barn has seen its final day.

Highway officials, led by Superintendent Shawn D. Spellacy, leveled the structure last week.

Town officials elected to demolish the building after significant deterioration recently. The structure was a storage area for highway equipment.

“It was in bad shape, and it would be way more costly to fix it up in the condition that it was in,” Town Supervisor Thomas E. Latimer said.

“It was deteriorating pretty bad, and we had to take it down,” Mr. Spellacy said. “We crushed up the old building there and loaded it onto four different trucks and brought it to the county transfer station.”

As the sounds of the demolition echoed through the area May 5, town historian Barbara J. Daniels witnessed the long-standing building’s demise.

“It was something that really needed to be done because back when we had high winds in the past, the big barn door had come off its hinges and it was just hanging there,” she said. “Then at that point they made the decision that something had to be done. It was dangerous to leave it standing any longer.”

It’s unclear exactly when the town barn was built. But Ms. Daniels said the town hall, situated in front of the barn, goes back to the mid-19th century; she thinks the barn probably went up after it.

The highway department equipment will be stored in a new garage near the intersection of routes 29 and 24. Mr. Spellacy said town officials do not expect another barn on the now-vacant property. “We saved some old lumber off of one of the interior walls of the building, and Barbara will be using some of that to display in the museum,” he said.
