COPENHAGEN — Ernest Costantino, 91, of Cape Coral, Florida and Copenhagen, NY, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the Lewis County Extended Care Facility in Lowville, NY, Born May 30, 1922 in Watertown, NY, son of Sam and Rose (Rosette) Costantino, he attended Watertown schools. Ernie entered the US Marines March 9, 1942 and was a member of the famed Third Marine Division. A veteran of Bouganville and Guam, Ernie was awarded the Purple Heart from his injuries at the invasion of Bouganville. He was honorably discharged from active duty March 1946 and the Reserves January 1951.
He married Julia Laksmith on January 8, 1952 in Calcium, NY. They lived in Evens Mils for many years. He worked at the NY Air Brake and later as a driver for ITT Continental Baking Co., retiring in 1984. They also lived in Black River and later moved to Cape Coral, Florida. Ernie was very active in local sports teams and coached Little League baseball. The Detroit Tigers was his longtime favorite baseball team. He was e member of the Evens Mils Volunteer Fire Department, the American Legion and the Marine Corps League.
Survivors are a sister, Lillian (Lewis) Alexander, Copenhagen, a brother, John Costantino, Watertown, a sister, Margaret Saine (Ken) Aldridge, Mineola, Texas, and several nieces and nephews. Ernie was predeceased by his parents, step-mother, Edna, wife, Julia and son, David.
Dr. Root, the nurses and aides at Lewis County Extended Care Home gave Ernie wonderful care. There will be no calling hours. Burial and memorial service will be held in Evans Mills Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., Carthage and Copenhagen.
