New legislation proposed by U.S. Sen. Kirsten E. Gillibrand and other lawmakers would aid military children by requiring Tricare, used by military service members, retirees and their families, to cover behavioral health treatments, including applied behavior analysis.

Sen. Gillibrand said such treatments can help children succeed in school and become more independent.

“It is alarming that our military families who have sacrificed so much are denied essential services for their children suffering from autism and other developmental disabilities,” Sen. Gillibrand said, in a statement.

The senator noted that 44 states and the District of Columbia require such coverage.
