Massena teen awakes with arm reattached, recovering at Mass General

MASSENA - A teenager who severed his right arm in a Violi’s Restaurant kitchen accident last month is awake and has successfully had his arm reattached.

Doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston completed the reattachment for Brett M. Bouchard, 17, who awoke 12 days ago. Doctors kept him on a ventilator and in a coma-like state to keep him from moving his arm following reattachment surgery.

“I don’t remember what happened when I first woke up, but three or four days later I remember the whole incident, the parts of it that I do remember,” he said. “I want to thank everyone, and they have given me a great outlook on life. It’s amazing.”

Mr. Bouchard’s mother, Rebecca Martin, said that her son’s arm has blood flow, doctors have reconnected two of his nerves and a future tendon transplant is being discussed.
