Frontier League girls track: Spartans’ Pastor delivers 4 victories

WATERTOWN — Skylar Pastor can produce success, even without her lucky socks.

The South Jefferson junior was part of four victories to lead the defending champion Spartans to the team title during the Frontier League girls track and field championships on a warm and windy Thursday afternoon at Watertown High School.

South Jefferson finished with 167 points, while Lowville scored 113 points for second place. Beaver River (76 points) was third, while Indian River (63) and Carthage (62) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Pastor captured the 200- and 400-meter dashes and the high jump, and she anchored the fastest 1,600 relay in 4 minutes, 17.24 seconds.

Pastor usually wears her favorite smiley-face socks to every big meet but left them at home because they were in the wash. She forgot to pack socks for the meet and had to borrow a pair of black ankle socks, right off his feet, from classmate Morgan Deleel, who competes on the boys track team.

“They were sweaty and gross, but I had to wear them,” joked Pastor, a five-time league champion in the 400 and four-time champ in the 200. She’s also a former state Division II champion in the 400.

The highlight of the meet for Pastor was her team’s finish in the 1,600 relay. Lowville had gained a solid lead in the race by the time Pastor received the baton from Leah Denny. Pastor dug in to pass Lowville freshman Alexis Bach for an impressive finish.

“Skylar’s performance in that wind was just outstanding,” South Jefferson coach Julie Storms said. “The rest of that 4x4 tried so hard to keep it close.”

Kylie Snow and Breana Johnson ran the first two legs of that race.

“I was a little nervous for the 4x4,” Pastor said. “All the girls, we were screaming at each other, ‘We gotta want it, we gotta go!’ I was really happy the way that turned out.”

Pastor was also pleased with her finish in the 400, despite clocking a slightly slower time than anticipated.

“This wind was crazy,” Pastor said. “By the time I reached the halfway mark, I felt like I was walking, the wind was so strong.”

Denny, who captured the triple jump, also had a part in a thrilling, first-place 400 relay, which was too close to determine without the professional timing service.

South Jefferson’s Kealy DeForest stumbled on the second handoff, and Denny just barely retrieved the baton to avoid stepping out of zone and being disqualified. Freshman Alexis Roberts anchored the race, beating Indian River’s Lydia Torres by .03 seconds for an incredible finish.

Jackie Miller claimed the 1,500 and took second in the 3,000 for South Jefferson, while teammate Amanda Lloyd won the 3,000 and finished second in the 1,500.

Ellory Roberts won the shot put and discus and took second in the 100 for Lowville. Erin Fayle was first in the 800, and Bach claimed the long jump for the Red Raiders.

For Beaver River, defending champion Malori Mattimore captured the pentathlon, and Sierra Neddo claimed the 100 hurdles.

Emma Bonk captured the 400 hurdles for the second straight season, and Makayla Jones took the 100 for Indian River.

Christina Platt won the pole vault for a second consecutive year for South Lewis.

The team title capped off a super birthday for Storms, who sported a tiara at the end of the meet, which was given to her by her sister, Ellie Zehr. The team then sang “Happy Birthday” to their coach.
