Louisville sees big savings from wood pellet stove

LOUISVILLE — The town of Louisville is just one more winter season away from recouping the $30,000 investment it put into a new heating system at its municipal building.

Councilman Daniel O’Keefe has been studying the savings.

This year he said the town purchased 65.5 tons of wood pellets at a cost of $12,119.35. Using the formula that one ton of pellets is equal to 120 gallons of fuel, at $3.28 per gallon, Mr. O’Keefe said the town would have spent $25,776.97 on fuel.

“That’s a 52.98 percent savings,” Mr. O’Keefe said, explaining that when the $13,657.52 the town saved this year is added to the roughly $10,000 they saved last year, the $30,000 they spent to install the heating system is now looking like a bargain.

With another winter more like the mild winter we experienced two years ago, Mr. O’Keefe said the town will see its savings eclipse $30,000 sometime during the 2014-15 winter season.

“This was a good investment,” Town Supervisor Larry R. Legault said.

Councilman Patrick D. Carroll added, “This was a very good investment.”

The $120,000 heating system was paid for with the assistance of a $90,000 grant from the River Valley Redevelopment Association. The grant had a $30,000 local share.
