Massena man jailed on grand larceny count

GRAND LARCENY - MASSENA - A 34-year-old Massena man charged with shoplifting more than $1,000 worth of merchandise from the Massena Walmart store in December was without bail late Monday afternoon.

Village police charged Michael “Miko” J. Brown of 377 County Route 41, Massena, with the felony count of fourth-degree grand larceny, three misdemeanor charges of petit larceny, second-degree menacing and a disorderly conduct violation stemming from a series of incidents that took place between December and Sunday. He was picked up on the arrest warrants Monday in Norfolk by Norfolk Town Police and turned over to village police.

Brown was arraigned by Massena Village Justice Eric J. Gustafson and sent to the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility without bail. Mr. Gustafson told Brown he was unable to set bail on the new felony count since he has two prior felony convictions. Only a superior court judge, in most cases the county court judge, can set bail for defendants with two or more prior felony convictions. He is scheduled to reappear Tuesday afternoon in Massena Village Court.

Brown allegedly walked past the last point of sale at the store on Dec. 16 without paying for $1,103.97 worth of merchandise, including a Gateway computer, a 39-inch Phillips LED television, a 32-inch Samsung television and a package of paper towels.

The petit larceny counts stem from alleged shoplifting incidents at the Walmart store on Dec. 1, Jan. 9 and Jan. 22. He reportedly left the Walmart store on Jan. 9 with $814.92 worth if merchandise when he walked out of the store without paying for items in a cart filled with a 4,200 watt generator, a Ninja blender. a Soda Stream starter kit and a Hamilton Beach toaster over.

The menacing and disorderly conduct charges stem from an incident at 4:30 p.m. Sunday on Cornell Avenue. Brown allegedly shoved and threatened to stab Douglas Landon during a brief confrontation outside Mr. Landon’s residence.

Floyd H. Smith told police he was walking toward Mr. Landon’s residence Sunday afternoon when Brown drove up next to him with his girlfriend, Ciera Smith, Mr. Smith’s ex-wife. Mr. Smith said Brown shouted a derogatory remark at him. Mr. Smith said he told Mr. Landon about the confrontation, and Mr. Landon went outside and told Brown to leave the area.

Mr. Landon said he wasn’t leaving until Mr. Smith came outside so he could fight him, leading to a brief physical confrontation in the street between Mr. Landon and Brown. Mr. Landon said Brown pulled out and opened a knife and threatened to stab him. Mr. Landon said he then called police to report the incident.
