Police investigate death of Canton teen

CANTON — A 16-year-old Canton Central School student was found dead at his home Sunday afternoon, according to Canton Village Police.

“We are investigating this as a tragic death. There wasn’t any sign of foul play,” said Police Chief Lori A. McDougal.

The chief and school officials said they would not release the teen’s name at this point.

Village Police Sgt. Basil Cheney responded to the teen’s Riverside Drive home after receiving a call at roughly 3:45 p.m. Also responding were Ms. McDougal, SUNY Canton University Police and St. Lawrence County Coroner Joseph White.

Ms. McDougal said she believes the body was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Potsdam, where an autopsy may be conducted today.

Canton Central School Superintendent William A. Gregory said counselors are available to assist students and faculty experiencing difficulty in dealing with the tragedy.

“We were all saddened to learn of the tragic death of a Canton High School student,” Mr. Gregory said in an email. “Our hearts and prayers are certainly with the student’s family and friends.”
