WEST CARTHAGE — Three local men were relatively unharmed after their canoe capsized during a fishing trip Sunday night on Lake Pleasant.

State police in Carthage said the call came in at 10:19 p.m. The three men were able to swim safely ashore before rescuers arrived on the scene, police said.

One of the men, 21-year-old Brandon M. Dicob of Copenhagen, fell in the woods as the three ran for help. The two other men, Tyler D. Henry, 22, of Copenhagen, and Dakar Paterson, 21, of Watertown, made it to County Route 47 and got help. The three were treated for minor hypothermia at Carthage Area Hospital and released.

Police said alcohol may have been a factor, but as the boat was not motorized, no charges are pending.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies assisted on the scene. Fire departments from Rutland, West Carthage, Carthage, Copenhagen and Champion responded.

“They really showed up there last night,” one trooper said, referring to the fire departments. “These guys did a hell of a job.”
