WATERTOWN Sandra M. Belden has announced her retirement following 33 years at the Jefferson County Sheriffs Office.
Ms. Belden started her career with the sheriffs office in 1981, serving under then-Sheriff Alfred P. ONeill. Before that, she worked in the Jefferson County Personnel Office, starting in 1978. In total, Ms. Belden worked 36 years for the county.
In that time, she has served as secretary for six different sheriffs: Mr. ONeill, Franklyn F. Gowing, Donald M. Pettit, Donald F. Newberry, James L. Lafferty and John P. Burns, who has held that position since 2002.
Undersheriff Paul W. Trudeau said she was able to adjust and perform her duties in a highly professional manner while serving under each sheriff.
She was credited with establishing procedures within the department that will be used for years to come.
Ms. Belden has been a huge asset to the department and she will be sadly missed, Mr. Trudeau said.
