Hammond man accused of fleeing police, driving while intoxicated

DEKALB — State police on Monday charged Jesse R. Gates, 36, Hammond, with third-degree unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, resisting arrest and driving while intoxicated.

Troopers said they attempted to stop Mr. Gates for speeding at 4:20 p.m. on Route 11 in the town of DeKalb, but instead of stopping he accelerated, turning north onto Old Northerner Road. He lost control of the vehicle and drove off the road, rolling over several times in a field, police said.

Mr. Gates, who was alone in the vehicle, then fled on foot, troopers said. He was Tasered, taken into custody and taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ogdensburg, where he was treated for minor injuries before being turned back over to state police. Troopers said he refused to take sobriety tests.

Mr. Gates also was issued several traffic tickets. He was arraigned in Macomb Town Court and sent to St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, on $3,000 cash bail or $6,000 bond.

On March 3, Mr. Gates was charged by troopers with aggravated DWI, resisting arrest and speeding after they stopped him for speeding and he allegedly fled on foot.
