ROCHESTER — An upstate New York man has been found guilty of murder in the 2012 beating death of his girlfriend inside her college dormitory room.

The Democrat and Chronicle of Rochester reported that 22-year-old Clayton Whittemore was convicted Friday by a jury in Monroe County Court in Rochester.

Prosecutors said Whittemore killed 18-year-old Alexandra Kogut in her dorm room at the State University of New York College at Brockport, 15 miles west of Rochester. Whittemore is from New Hartford, N.Y., as was Kogut.

Whittemore was enrolled at Utica College when he killed the former high school swimming star by beating her with his fists and a curling iron.

Whittemore faces up to 25 years to life in prison at his sentencing on July 16.
