Former Watertown Wizard and right-handed pitcher Shae Simmons made his major league debut for the Atlanta Braves against the Miami Marlins.
Simmons, helped preserve the Braves 9-5 win as he entered in the eighth inning with two men on and two out and faced only one batter as he struck out Jarrod Saltalamacchia on three pitches to end the threat and earn a hold.
A 23-year-old native of Scott City, Mo., Simmons did not learn of his first call-up to the majors until 11 on Friday night.
A product of Southeastern Missouri State, Simmons played with the Wizards in the summer of 2010 and was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 22nd round of the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft.
Simmons made six appearances with the Braves during spring training this March and was assigned to the Double-A Mississippi Braves of the Southern League before he was called up.
