MASSENA Repeal signs decorated Spring Park on Saturday during the villages first Constitutional Awareness Convention.
Members of groups who oppose the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act gun control law rallied in the park with signs, T-shirts, bumper stickers and voter pledges. They hoped to spread awareness of constitutional rights. They also wanted others to know that they believe the SAFE Act violates them, according to New York Revolution administrator and event organizer Aaron J. Miller of Massena.
The SAFE Act is the pushing point for this, but all of our amendments are not meant to be trampled on, Mr. Miller said. There are a lot of sportsmen in Northern New York. Why do we lose our rights because of someone elses poor decisions?
Mr. Miller said the convention, which was sponsored by Shooters Committee on Political Education Inc., was the first to be held in Massena.
Along with New York Revolution members were such groups as the Northern New York Freedom Fighters, the New York 2nd Amendment Grassroots Coalition and the New York Chapter of Gun Rights Across America. SCOPE and the Freedom Fighters passed out voter pledge forms for people to sign.
Were trying to get more people to vote and to vote for candidates who stand up for our constitutional rights and oppose the New York SAFE Act, SCOPE President Stephen J. Aldstadt said.
Some of those candidates attended the rally, including Karen M. Bisso, whos running for the 115th Assembly seat, Russell J. Finley for the 116th district seat and Joseph M. Gilbert, the tea party candidate for New Yorks 21st Congressional District.
Its not just about the SAFE Act, said Mr. Finley. This is about everything thats going on today and how our rights are being trampled. Most of the people in Northern New York are gun owners. Its trampling our heritage.
Cathy A. Sapeta, executive director of New Yorkers United For Kids, had a table set up during the rally advocating to repeal Common Core.
The ELA textbooks it requires our children to read watered down the 2nd Amendment, she said. The philosophy of the 2nd Amendment is being manipulated.
A group of five Freedom Fighters said theyre doing all they can to get Cuomo out of office.
They were selling Repeal the SAFE Act signs and T-shirts with a Gadsden flag on them.
Local band Juggernut Agenda played on stage and bounce houses and face painting were set up for children as a way to get them involved in the event as well.
We should be raising our kids based on the constitution, right and wrong and all of that, Mr. Miller said. I dont think it should be hidden from the kids.
