Heuvelton man jailed after alleged assaults and car crash

OGDENSBURG — A Heuvelton man was arrested Saturday after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, crashed her truck and attacked a hospital worker and a state trooper.

State police charged Devin B. Johnson, 29, of 37 Lisbon St., with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, driving while ability impaired by drugs, second-degree assault, third-degree grand larceny and second-degree harassment. He also was cited with failure to maintain lane, failure to keep right and wearing no seat belt.

Troopers said that about 9:15 p.m., Mr. Johnson left his home in his girlfriend’s Dodge Durango after he slapped her in the face and grabbed her by the mouth and slammed her head into a window.

At 10:30 p.m. on Route 37 near Perry Road in the town of Oswegatchie, Mr. Johnson was heading east when the vehicle crossed the center line and left the roadway off the north shoulder, striking a National Grid utility pole, troopers said. He was taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries to his wrists and back.

When troopers attempted to obtain a blood sample from Mr. Johnson at the hospital, they allege he became combative, pulled out his intravenous tubes and attempted to leave the hospital. In the process, troopers said, he kicked a hospital staff member in the throat and struck a trooper in the face with his knee.

He eventually was subdued and placed in hospital restraints, police said. He was arraigned in Morristown Town Court and sent to the St. Lawrence County jail, Canton, on no bail. Further charges may be pending the results of the blood test.
