Paperwork delays demolition of Parishville town barn

PARISHVILLE — Some unexpected extra paperwork has delayed the demolition of Parishville’s old town barn on state Route 72.

“Right now we’re waiting on the New York State Department of Labor. We need to get all that is necessary to request a variance from them for some reason or another. It was kind of a surprise to all of us when they stopped our work over there,” Town Supervisor Rodney G. Votra said. “The asbestos has been all removed and taken out of there so basically we’re just at the demolition process itself.”

Town officials in late March awarded a $48,000 contract to Independent Commercial Contractors Inc., Lorraine, for the labor. The payment includes a $20,000 base bid for the removal of friable asbestos and $28,000 for the demolition and disposal of the building.

According to state Department of Labor Associate Safety and Health Engineer Vincent Rapacciuolo, the variance should be taken care of within the week.

On top of the $48,000 price tag, the town is required to supply an independent air monitor for the work since it owns the building. A bid of just under $7,000 from Atlantic Testing, Canton, to provide that work was accepted in March.

“We’ve been delayed now for about three or four weeks. The project would have been complete had we not been required to wait for this variance,” Mr. Votra said.

“Basically now we just wait for the variance to be approved by the state and the others that they have to do ahead of ours. ... It’s not going to be a problem moving forward, it’s just a piece of paperwork that we need to be signed.”
