Howard E. Rowe


Howard E. Rowe, 93, of 23948 NYS Rt. 12, Watertown, passed June 1, 2014 at the Samaritan Medical Center.

A prayer service will be 9:30 a.m. Thurs., June 5 at Hart & Bruce Funeral Home, Watertown followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Burial with military honors will be in the N. Watertown Cemetery.

Calling hours will be 4-7 p.m. Weds., June 4 at the funeral home.

Born on March 26, 1921 in Watertown, NY, son of the late J. Hunt and Ella Bernice Gorton Rowe, he graduated from Watertown High School.

Mr. Rowe entered the U.S. Army on December 16, 1942 and served with the 39th Infantry division 142nd regiment in the European Theater during WWII. He received a number of badges and medals including the Bronze Star. He was honorably on December 27, 1945 as a Private First Class.

He married Lucille M. Damon on September 11, 1948 at Holy Family Church wit Rev. Shue officiating. They spent 20 years wintering in Florida besides traveling throughout the USA and Europe.

Mr. Rowe was associated with local automotive and boating industries including International harvester, Plumpton Chevrolet and Northrop Motors. For seventeen years he was co-promoter of the stock car races at the Watertown Speedway. He was inducted into the DIRT Motor Sports Hall of Fame, Weedsport. He recently retired as owner/operator of HERO Enterprises, Bradley Street Road. He was a communicate of Sacred Heart Church, a life member of the American Legion Post 61 and the Knights of Columbus Council 259. He is a past commander of the Watertown Power Squadron. He was a Boy Scout Leader for Troop 23, Sacred Heart Church. Mr. Rowe is a former member of the Kountry Kuzzins Modern Square Dance Club, Cosmopolitan Dance Group and the North Side Improvement League. He enjoyed automobiles, motorcycles, boating, dirt track racing, traveling and dancing. After learning to fly a plane, he did his first solo at the age of 60.

Among his survivors are his loving wife and best friend of sixty five years, Lucille M. Rowe, Watertown; two sons and daughter in law, Gary E. and Cindy (West) Rowe, Watertown, Neil J. Rowe, Rochester, and a daughter and son-in-law, Julie M. and Dale Call. Six grandchildren, Megan (Rob) Thackston, Brendon and Bradley Rowe, Shawntel, Christopher (Alexandra) and Gwendolyn Clark. Also, four sister and three brothers-in-law, Virginia and Don Gladle, Watertown, Rosie and Ellsworth Barber, Sandy Creek, Peggy and David Lovenguth, Williamstown, NY, Phyllis LeBeau, Pulaski and a brother Rex, Parish, NY plus many nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by three brothers, Donald, Cedric, Paul and four sisters, Betty Menard, Beverly, Barbara and Shirley Rowe.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart Church, Watertown.
