Watertown man pleads guilty to stabbing city man


WATERTOWN — A city man pleaded guilty Wednesday in Jefferson County Court to charges that he stabbed a man during an altercation in October.

Frank L. Cooley Jr., 26, of 215 S. Hamilton St., Apt. 1, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. Sentencing was set for Aug. 15.

He had been charged in a grand jury indictment handed up in March with causing grave risk of death to Michael J. Campany, Watertown, by stabbing him in the chest with a knife, causing a cut to Mr. Campany’s torso that required medical treatment. The incident occurred Oct. 9 at Franklin Street and Flower Avenue East.

In other court activity:

Steven M. LaPlaca, 52, of 10467 N. Park St., Adams, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree attempted grand larceny and attempted workers’ compensation fraud. He had been accused in November of providing false information regarding an on-duty injury at Watertown Correctional Facility, where he is a corrections officer, and collecting $16,124 from the state’s insurance and workers’ compensation fund. He subsequently was sentenced to a one-year conditional discharge and ordered to perform 100 hours of community service. He also paid full restitution up front.

Marya S. Baker, 34, of 7623 Route 11, Adams, pleaded guilty to third-degree forgery and third-degree identity theft. Further information about the charges was not available. She is expected to be sentenced Aug. 5 to a conditional discharge and be ordered to complete the Bridge program.

Marcus A. Williams, 28, whose last known address was 232 W. Main St., was sentenced to six months in the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building and five years’ probation after pleading guilty April 9 to third-degree attempted criminal sale of a controlled substance. He admitted that he tried to sell cocaine within the county Nov. 19.

Leona R. Gregory, 42, whose last known address was 21 Wardwell St., Apt. C., Adams, was sentenced to five years’ probation and ordered to pay $7,164 in restitution after pleading guilty April 8 to fourth-degree grand larceny. She admitted that she stole money from Jennifer Pamlin, also of Adams, between Nov. 7 and Dec. 8. State police said at the time of her arrest that she used Ms. Pamlin’s debit card without permission.

In court activity Monday:

Bryant P. Sanford, 28, Watertown, pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary. It had been alleged that he entered Frosty’s Ice Cream on Bradley Street with the intention of stealing something on June 3, 2013. He is expected to be sentenced June 30 to two to four years in state prison and be ordered to pay $277 in restitution in the form of a civil judgment.
