NCPR: Doheny campaign ad uses audio out of context and without permission

North Country Public Radio has responded to Republican congressional candidate Matthew A. Doheny’s response ad responding to a GOP super PAC’s response to his campaign.

In a post to the NCPR News blog, Program Director Jackie Sauter writes that Mr. Doheny’s campaign used reporting from a candidate profile of his opponent, Elise M. Stefanik, out of context and without authorization.

“We’re going on record here to tell you that we did not authorize use of North Country Public Radio’s reputation or reporting in this ad,” Ms. Sauter writes. “We believe that the use of our name and our audio without our consent is not acceptable, that the material is used out of context, and that the ad violates our journalistic integrity. We have asked the Doheny campaign to take all references to NCPR out of the ad. We are waiting for a reply.”

The ad, “The Truth,” was released by Mr. Doheny’s campaign today in response to an ad sponsored by GOP super PAC American Crossroads in which Mr. Doheny’s candidacy and character are called into question.

It features a brief audio clip from a story about Ms. Stefanik’s connections to Willsboro by reporter Brian Mann that aired on May 20.

Mr. Doheny will face Ms. Stefanik in a June 24 primary election. Mr. Doheny has been endorsed by the state Independence Party while Ms. Stefanik has been endorsed by the state Conservative Party.
