TOLEDO — The Toledo Walleye of the East Coast Hockey League announced Monday the hiring of Brasher Falls native Derek Lalonde as the team’s head coach.

Lalonde, a former St. Lawrence Central goaltender, previously was the coach and general manager of the Green Gamblers of the United States Hockey League. Lalonde compiled a 111-54-14 record for the Gamblers, leading the team to the regular season and playoff titles during the 2011-12 year. He won USHL Coach of the Year honors after the season.

Lalonde also coached the Team USA Under-19 team that won gold at the World Junior “A” Challenge in November.

Lalonde replaces Nick Vitucci, who resigned in February.

The Walleye, which went 21-44-7 last season, is a Detroit Red Wings’ affiliate.

Prior to the Gamblers, Lalonde was an assistant for the University of Denver for five seasons. He’s also worked as an assistant for Ferris State. He played collegiately for SUNY Cortland.
