Massena Matt Hatch signs hockey deal with Philadelphia Flyers

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Massena native Matt Hatch, who was a senior forward on Union College’s men’s hockey national championship team, signed a free-agent contract Tuesday with the Philadelphia Flyers’ American Hockey League affiliate in Lehigh Valley.

Hatch, who is 24, scored 13 goals this season and added four more in the post season. In 148 career games he scored 34 goals with 39 assists.

Hatch helped lead Massena to a state hockey championship in 2008.

“He’s a gritty kid with high-end speed,” Flyers GM Ron Hextall said.

Hatch is the second Union player in the Flyers’ organization, joining defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere.

Hextall said it was doubtful Hatch would be at the Flyers’ training camp, but he didn’t rule it out.

Four players from Union have signed with NHL teams or their affiliates.

Hatch is the son of Brian and Tina Hatch of Massena.
