Canton teams place at state Envirothon competition

PAUL SMITHS — The North Adirondack Regional Envirothon was held May 8 at Paul Smith’s College, with a team from Canton Central School (Grace Brown, Will Gallup, Luke Gallup and Zach Ladison) taking first place, not only for St. Lawrence County, but for the entire event.

The NARE program brings schools from Clinton, Essex, Franklin and St. Lawrence counties together to compete for the opportunity to represent their county at the state Envirothon. The Canton team scored above the 28 other teams participating in the local event this year.

The Envirothon involves teams of five students from each school competing in the subjects of forestry, soils, aquatics, wildlife and a current issue. The current issue for 2014 concerned sustainable agriculture and local foods. The students are required to answer questions and demonstrate hands on application of these topics. The Canton Central School team placed first in the wildlife, forestry and aquatic subject areas.

The Canton team (Gemma Del Rossi, Grace Brown, Will Gallup and Zach Ladison) joined the other three county winners from NARE to travel to Morrisville College for the New York State Envirothon May 21 and 22. Canton Central School placed 10th out of 41 teams from all over the state. This is the second year in a row that Canton Central School’s team placed in the top 10 statewide.

The NARE program is put together by the local Soil and Water Conservation Districts from Clinton, Essex, Franklin and St Lawrence counties and is sponsored by Paul Smith’s College along with many other local supporters. For more information on the Envirothon, contact the St. Lawrence County Soil and Water Conservation District at 386-3582.
