Port Leyden Superintendent fired, gravel theft alleged

PORT LEYDEN — Lewis County sheriff’s deputies were informed Friday morning of the termination of village Superintendent Robert Matuszczak, following what was reported to the department as a larceny involving gravel.

Undersheriff James M. Monnat said his office received a complaint Friday morning from Mayor Sandra J. Sexton.

“She reported someone saw Mr. Matuszczak take a load of gravel from behind the DPW building,” he said. “She stated he was using his personal vehicle to do so.”

Ms. Sexton informed the sheriff’s department that the village Board of Trustees had already met and terminated Mr. Matuszczak from his position.

“We did not conduct an investigation,” said Undersheriff Monnat. “No arrest was desired at this time, but the mayor did ask our office to contact Mr. Matuszczak and advise him not to contact and/or harass her.”

Mr. Matuszczak could not be reached for comment. Information on the date of the alleged incident was unavailable.

When reached, Ms. Sexton would not discuss the matter, stating “no comment.”

Attempts to contact Trustees Lynn R. Ripp, Janice Belmont, Peter Smith and Peter Kraeger were unsuccessful.

The village is awaiting word from the state Office of Emergency Management and Federal Emergency Management Agency as to whether flood damages that occurred two weeks ago will receive a disaster declaration and financial assistance. An estimate to repair a village road and portion of the sewer system washed out by flash flooding is approximately $1 million.
