South Lewis baseball falls in state quarterfinals

SYRACUSE — Senior left-hander Michael Korchak spun a three-hit shutout, striking out 14, to lead Binghamton Seton Catholic to a 4-0 win over South Lewis in the Class C state baseball quarterfinals Saturday at Onondaga Community College.

Seton Catholic (15-6), the Section 4 champion, took advantage of four South Lewis errors to earn a spot in the state semifinals next weekend. The Saints are the defending state Class C champions.

Section 3 champion South Lewis (18-2), falling in the state quarterfinals for the second time in three seasons, only managed doubles by Lucas Kelly in the first inning and Josh Wheeler in the sixth, and a single from Shawn Loomis in the sixth off Korchak.

South Lewis pitcher Jason Martin suffered his first loss of the season, allowing eight hits and striking out eight.
