LOWVILLE — Tug Hill Vineyards has announced the release of its first sparkling wine made with Marquette grapes grown in the north country.

The winery off Route 12 in West Lowville has introduced its new sparkling wine called “Cuvée Rosé,” made from locally grown grapes using a traditional method that has been used for centuries in the Champagne region of France, according to a press release issued by the winery.

Marquette grapes used to make the wine were sourced from growers Darrell M. and Carrie L. Sweredoski, who own a vineyard off Route 12 in Watertown. The couple exclusively grows Marquette grapes.

Susan E. Maring, who owns Tug Hill Vineyards with her husband, Michael F., said that the couple decided to buy Marquette grapes in the fall of 2013 to produce the sparkling wine.

“We chose Mr. Sweredoski’s grapes as we believed they had the best flavor profile and analytics to support the type of wine we wanted to make,” Mrs. Maring said in a quoted statement. “Since our vineyards and banquet hall have become a popular wedding destination, we feel that creating our own ‘traditional’ sparkling wine was only natural.”

In a prepared statement, Tug Hill Vineyards winemaker Craig A. Hosbach said that Marquette grapes were selected to make the wine because it is among only a few varieties used for champagne production in France.

“We also believe that a sparkling rosé wine made from Marquette grapes demonstrates the creativity and ingenuity of north country vintners and our ability to create a wide variety of wines to reach all consumers,” he said.

Tug Hill Vineyards celebrated the release of its sparkling wine Friday by hosting its first “Garden Party Friday” event.
