SUNY Canton begins application review process for Start-Up NY program

CANTON — SUNY Canton will start reviewing applications for its Start-Up NY program, which was approved by the state last week.

The college will have four properties on and off campus for businesses that partner with the college.

Businesses that locate on those properties under the program will not have to pay property, sales or business taxes and employees won’t have to pay income tax for 10 years.

Lenore E. VanderZee, a college spokeswoman who oversees the college’s Start-Up NY program, said it already has one business application under review and about 12 inquiries.

Ms. VanderZee said the college is looking for businesses that can contribute to SUNY Canton’s academic mission by accepting interns from the college, providing school supplies or equipment, or providing a scholarship program for the college.

“A local business would be great,” she said. “We’re open to business from anywhere as long as it’s a true partnership where we’re both getting something out of it.”

Ms. VanderZee said SUNY Canton is looking at businesses focused on manufacturing, high technology or information technology, or health care.

She said that after the college approves an application, it will submit a sponsorship application to the state’s Empire State Development Corp., which will decide whether the business meets the requirements of the program.

“We’re hoping to have a business in place by this fall, depending on the campus review process as well as the Empire State Development Corp.,” Ms. VanderZee said.

She said the college might work with the St. Lawrence County Industrial Development Agency and the Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority on securing more spacious properties for the program that could create opportunities for larger businesses.

“Especially in the north country, Start-Up NY provides a real opportunity to grow the economy,” she said.
