Diocese of Ogdensburg plans Building Strong Families workshop

Building strong families will be the focus of a July 26 workshop offered by the Diocese of Ogdensburg.

Dr. Angela Franks - author, professor, scholar and TV host - will examine various factors that can negatively impact marriage, including: commitment-phobia, pornography, the hook-up culture, and unintended consequences of contraception.

Dr. Franks, who earned her Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from Boston College, researches, writes and publishes extensively on these topics. Since 2007, she has been a professor at St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, Massachusetts, where she is currently Director of the Master of Theological Studies Program for the New Evangelization. Her books include Margaret Sanger’s Eugenic Legacy: The Control of Female Fertility (2005) and Contraception and Catholicism: What the Church Teaches and Why (2010). Dr. Franks also contributed a chapter, entitled “The Joy of Giving: Church Teaching on Contraception,” to Erica Bochiochi’s book, Women, Sex, and The Church. Also a popular speaker, Dr. Franks has made presentations in venues that include Harvard Law School, Wellesley College, and the University of Notre Dame.

At the day-long event, Dr. Franks will consider the impact of these issues in the lives of men and women, and on marriage itself; she will also propose practical approaches to making marriages stronger. In addition to her three presentations, the format will include interactive discussion opportunities, as well as extensive time for questions. This workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Church of the Visitation (Parish Center) in Norfolk.

All persons interested in learning more about these issues, and in strengthening marriage, are welcome to attend. Registration may be made online at For more information, please contact Angelo/Suzanne Pietropaoli at 518-483-0459 or
