St. Mark’s donates $5K for repairs to Port Leyden pool

PORT LEYDEN — Repairs are underway at the Port Leyden village pool with a donation from St. Mark’s Episcopal Church footing the nearly $5,000 bill.

Mayor Sandra J. Sexton was surprised by the presentation of a $5,000 check at the village Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday night, offering thanks to the congregation.

Village employee Joshua Marmon, who is set to take over as superintendent of public works next month, explained the extensive damage noticed last year.

“We had a big crack across the pool deck. We barricaded it off all summer, but it needs to be fixed before we open this year,” he said.

Currently, old pavement has been jackhammered out and prep work has begun to replace it.

Trustee Janice Belmont also serves as the clerk/treasurer at St. Mark’s, though she holds no voting power on the church board.

“When we had the flood we knew we wanted to do something to help the village,” Ms. Belmont said, referring to flash flooding that caused approximately $1 million in damages to village roads and sewer.

“How can you single out one person?” she said of deciding how to help the village.

At that time, the village — which still had no final estimates concerning flood damage — had nonetheless committed to repairing the pool.

“Our (church) board voted. Our priest, Rev. Dr. John F. LaVoe, thought it was a wonderful idea,” she said. “We’ve also been blessed with two great benefactors.”

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church also contributes $1,000 to the Port Leyden Food Bank each year.

The pool is expected to open on time at the end of the month.
