High-speed pursuit ends with Norfolk man striking patrol car

BOMBAY — A Norfolk man is facing a cluster of charges after allegedly leading troopers on a high-speed chase Tuesday that ended when he struck a state police car.

State police charged Matthew D. Love, 30, of 320 River Road, with felony third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree reckless endangerment, third-degree fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle and reckless driving, all misdemeanors, and multiple traffic infractions, including six counts of speeding in a zone, three counts of exceeding 55 miles an hour and one count of running a red light.

Troopers allege that at about 12:45 p.m. on Route 37C in Massena, after being asked to pull over at a police checkpoint for a secondary check on an outdated inspection sticker, Mr. Love pulled over and then took off at a high rate of speed, reaching speeds of up to 100 miles per hour.

Troopers said the pursuit crossed county lines and entered into the town of Bombay when Mr. Love struck a marked patrol vehicle when he was attempting to turn onto Tarbell Road.

Troopers charged Mr. Love with third-degree criminal mischief for allegedly striking the police vehicle and with second-degree reckless endangerment when he nearly struck a vehicle operated by Michele F. Mitchell, Massena, after she pulled onto Route 37 from a parking lot in Akwesasne.

He was arraigned in Massena Town Court and released under the supervision of the probation department before being transported to Town Court for arraignment.

The results of that arraignment were not immediately available as of Wednesday night.
