Governor hopeful begins New York primary challenge

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A liberal New York law professor has launched a primary challenge to unseat Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Zephyr Teachout formally announced her campaign Monday at the state Capitol, saying Cuomo is too focused on his own ambitions and the interests of wealthy donors.

Teachout faults the governor for supporting business-friendly tax cuts and for not doing enough to reduce income inequality. She says she knows she is an underdog but that her campaign is more than a protest.

Teachout is a Fordham University law professor who campaigned unsuccessfully for the nomination of the left-leaning Working Families Party. Cuomo narrowly won the party’s endorsement after vowing to support its priorities, including a higher minimum wage and broad public campaign financing.

Columbia University law professor Tim Wu is Teachout’s running mate.
