Norfolk ice arena could see freeze in rates next season

NORFOLK - Norfolk’s Dominic Zappia Community Center ice skating arena’s success in the 2013-2014 season may lead to a freeze in ice rates next year, according to town officials.

Town Supervisor Charles A. Pernice announced figures from the arena recreation report during this week’s town board meeting.

“The total cost to the taxpayers for 2013-2014 was $26,621.60. I think it would be a safe bet to say that there isn’t an arena that runs with that kind of margin in the north country,” he said. “We had a little less ice rental because of (SUNY Potsdam) but still - $26,621 when it’s just hockey primarily - that cost to the taxpayers, I don’t know of anywhere else in the county that has that.”

Mr. Pernice attributed much of the arena’s success to recreation chairperson Butch Levine.

“It’s been four or five years since we’ve raised ice rates and I wanted to make sure that we didn’t need to again,” Mr. Pernice said.

The arena currently charges $70 per hour for minor hockey and figure skating users. It charges $75 per hour for adults and $80 per hour for high school purposes.
