Hannon honored as Parishville-Hopkinton valedictorian


PARISHVILLE - The Parishville-Hopkinton Central School District has announced its valedictorian and salutatorian for the 2013-2014 school year.

Valedictorian Eric Hannon is the son of David and Rebecca Hannon of Winthrop.

He has attended Parishville-Hopkinton Central School since fifth grade. Prior to that he attended Kent Elementary School in Carmel. Mr. Hannon has earned a seven semester GPA average of 94.82 and will graduate with an Advanced Designation Regents Diploma with Honors and 35 credits. He has completed the requirements for PHCS majors in Spanish, Math, Science, English, Social Studies and Music.

Mr. Hannon has been on the High Honor Roll every quarter of his junior and senior high school career. He has participated in Clarkson University Project Challenge, National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, All County Band, All County Orchestra, Band, Stage Band, Follies and Geology Club.

He played basketball and baseball and was a proud member of the 2012 Section 10 baseball champions and received the All-Academic Award. Mr. Hannon has earned numerous academic awards while at PHCS as well as the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award from the University of Rochester. He has held several leadership positions in different school clubs and volunteered many hours at Mandaville Camp and Retreat Center, in addition to volunteering on a mission trip to Puerto Rico.

Mr. Hannon will be attending Cedarville University in Ohio and plans on majoring in History and Business or in Geology.

Salutatorian Michael Burns is the son of John Burns and Constance Burns of Hopkinton.

Before starting at Parishville-Hopkinton, he attended elementary and junior high school in Massena. He first enrolled in Parishville-Hopkinton Central School in 2010 as an incoming freshman. Mr. Burns has earned a seven semester GPA of 94.70 and will graduate with an Advanced Designation Diploma and 38 credits. His local majors include Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, English, and Music.

Throughout high school at PHCS, Mr. Burns has been involved in many extracurricular activities. These activities include vice president of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Yearbook, Follies, Band, Chorus, Stage Band, NYSSMA, Biddy Basketball and Special Olympics. Along with these activities, he is a three-sport athlete and has played baseball, basketball, and football since he could walk.

He has been on varsity teams all four years of high school in baseball and basketball and three years in football. Although his favorite sport is baseball, he has excelled in all three sports. He has been a captain on each team, including three years captain on the varsity basketball team. He has received Academic All-Northerns in every sport and received a sportsmanship award in basketball, First Team All-Northern in football, and First and Second Team All-Northern in baseball. He is proud to be a part of the 2012 Section 10 champion baseball team.

Mr. Burns has had leads in all his high school musicals and has been a part of many All-County Choruses, including Area All-State Chorus and All-County Jazz Chorus. He has also committed many hours of community service during his time at PHCS. He is a very dedicated person in whatever he does and gives every task a 100 percent effort.

He is planning on attending either St. Lawrence University or SUNY Brockport in the fall of 2014. He would like to pursue a career in Athletic Training or Physical Education.
