A very dear friend of mine took her own life recently. While in prayer on this day that I am writing, I was led to meditate on God’s overall plan for mankind.
He created the heavens and he created our earth, including bountiful plant life that my friend enjoyed to the fullest. He created us to be with him, both on this earth and in heaven.
But he gave us the opportunity to make choices. The most important choice determines where we will spend eternity.
While we are in our earthly bodies we can choose to accept him, on his conditions, to be with him forever. Or we can reject him and be separated from him forever.
My friend had accepted him. This I know without a doubt.
She knew, as I do, that pride and greed and self-centeredness come to all of us because of the first man’s sin. She and I agreed, during spiritual visits long ago, that the closer we come to know God the father our maker, Jesus the son our teacher and the Holy Spirit our counselor, we gain the strength, the determination, the obedience and the will to keep the demons of pride, greed and self-centeredness in check.
My friend succeeded to a large degree in keeping those demons in check, resulting in a life lived with Christ-like love for all she knew. I rejoice that she made the right choice. She was a model for us all.
