Meredith Regan became the first youngster to take fund-raising honors in consecutive years at the Ogdensburg area St. Jude Hospital Bike-A-Thon. But she won’t have two bikes.
After leading the June 7 event in the Edgar Newell Golden Dome on the campus of Ogdensburg Free Academy the daughter of Dan Regan Jr. and Amber Harvey told the bike-a-thon directors that since she he had a new bike from last year she would like donate the value of the bike directly to St. Jude’s Hospital.
“I already had a bike from last year so I wanted to give the money for this year’s bike to St. Jude’s to help other children” said Meredith Regan who is a second grader at Kennedy School.
“I plan to do the bike-a-thon again next year and better this Year’s total.”
Meredith raised $426 this greatly exceeding her 2013 total of $265.
“Meredith raised all the money on her own. She got pledges from family and friends, from the people at Regan’s Collision,” said Amber Harvey.
“And she got her final donation of $50 from Don Dietschweller at Tim Horton’s coffee shop.”
St. Jude’s Hospital, where no child is ever turned away, was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas many years ago to carry the banner in the fight against pediatric cancer and other diseases which kill children.
“I thought that it was really nice of Meredith and her mom to come up with the idea,” said Bruce Tallon who directs the bike-a-thon with Jeff and Kasey Smith.
“I talked to our sponsor, Ogdensburg Pepsi, and they had no problem with the idea at all. So they will give us a check for the amount of the bike and it will be sent to St. Jude’s.
Ogdensburg Pepsi Cola General Manager Dick Wright said that his company will add a donation of their own to the value of the bike.
This year’s bike-a-thon drew 25 entries and raised $1,981.87.
Meredith Regan’s $426 was the fourth largest fund-raiser in the 19-year history of the event which has raised $39.077.21. The all-time record was $738.10 raised by Connor Grenier in 2012, second place was $654.50 raised by Kris Folsom in 2002 and third place is $500 raised by Julia Erwin in 2010.
