FC Freeze U12 girls surge past Watertown FC


CANTON - After trading goals early, the FC Freeze U12 Girls reeled off the final three tallies of the game in posting a 5-2 win over Watertown FC in a Northern New York Youth Soccer League game played Monday evening at St. Lawrence University field #1.

Olivia Mace (Dayton, Ohio) and Gabrielle Jones (Potsdam) combined to spark the winning offense. Katharine Cowen (Potsdam), Hannah Butler (Canton) and Sophia Janoyan (Potsdam) also contributed offensively while Natalie Cowen and Sophia Janoyan shared crease duties.

The Freeze were coming off an impressive 7-0 decision over CAVS Lake Effect at Immaculate Heart Central in Watertown last Wednesday with five players connecting for goals.

Mace started out strong with two shots on goal before scoring an unassisted goal four minutes into the contest. Mace’s shot from outside the penalty area was strategically placed in the high right corner of the net over the goalies left shoulder. Three minutes, later Katharine Cowen scored after receiving a pass from Janoyan. Cowen fired a shot in the lower left corner of the net. With 13:54 on the clock, Cowen scored an unassisted goal with a hard shot in the top right corner. The score at half-time was 3-0 FC Freeze.

In the second half of play, at 21:55, Mace passed to Gabrielle Jones (Potsdam) who rifled a left-footed shot into the left corner for the score. At 18:50 Jones intercepting a goal kick and blasted a shot at the CAVS goalie. The goalie was unable to control Jones’s shot and with lightning speed Jones’s then slammed the ball into the net.

At 14:11, Butler outfoxed three defenders and scored an unassisted goal with a shot in the top left of the net. Two minutes later, at 9:20, Louisa Moosbrugger (Potsdam) scored her first goal of the season after receiving a pass from Cowen.

With three minutes left in the game, Jones, who had taken over between the pipes, made a spectacular save to seal FC Freeze’s shutout.

Playing strong defense in the game were Potsdam’s Annie Akin, Natalie Cowen and Laura Dudek, and Parishville’s Quinn Woodward and Clara Maine. Goaltending duties were shared between Maine, Jones and Janoyan.


The FC Freeze U16 soccer team posted two wins in a span of three days to improve their record to 5-1 and remain tied atop of the Northern New York Youth Soccer League with a 5-0 win over General Brown Soccer Club on Monday and a 8-1 triumph over Thousand Island Soccer Club on Saturday.

In Monday night’s win, Ogdensburg’s Peyton Lalone and Madrid-Waddington’s Tyler Robinson each scored two goals and passed out one assist with Potdam’s Matt Stone finished off a corner kick from Colton-Pierrepont’s Ethan Knight to account for the offense. Lisbon’s Nick Spooner collected eight saves in the crease with Colton-Pierrepont’s Riley Doyle anchoring the defensive end.

In Saturday’s 8-1 victory over TISC, Lalone tallied a three goal hattrick with Robinson contribution one goal and one assist to pace the offense. Parishville-Hopkinton’s Lucas Snell and Garret Hayes each added a solo marker as did Lisbon’s Koby Jordan and Doyle with Lisbon’s Riley Alberto, Malone’s Ian Mahoney and Ogdensburg’s Noah Moore recording assists. Spooner stopped four shots in the crease.


The North Country Men’s Summer Soccer games slated for Sunday evening were all postponed to this Sunday.
