Area communities prepare to celebrate America’s birthday; fireworks tonight at Massena mall

MASSENA - With a fitness contest and beauty pageant already added to the list of activities for St. Lawrence Centre’s Independence Day celebration, St. Lawrence Centre Marketing Assistant Lindsey S. Breitbeck said this year’s celebration is bigger than ever.

“We’ve got a little more variety than we had last year,” Ms. Breitbeck said. “We’ve added some things.”

New to the roster of Thursday’s activities is a fitness contest from 4 to 8 p.m. hosted by The Temple, where people can participate in a pull-up or tire flipping contest.

Ms. Breitbeck said the organizers of the recently held Miss Massena pageant will also be hosting a second pageant on Thursday. Registration forms are available at the mall’s customer service center. The deadline for registration is 3:30 p.m. Thursday. The pageant will begin at 4 p.m. and all participants are required to wear red, white and blue.

Prize categories include best eyes, best smile, best hair and best attire. Each age group will also have either a princess or queen named.

The celebration will begin at 4 p.m. and conclude with what is being billed the county’s largest firework’s display at 10:15 p.m.

It’s only supposed to be 76 on Thursday, so that’s perfect,” Ms. Breitbeck said. “Last year was really hot, so this year should be better.”

While it’s not a new event on the schedule, the “Touch a Truck” event will also now include a display from the U.S. Coast Guard, who will also be on hand with children’s games, and doing safety demonstrations from 4 to 8 p.m. Both the Massena Volunteer Fire Department and rescue squad will be there from 5 to 7 p.m.

The evening will also include caricatures, face painting an ice cream truck, pony rides, bounce houses, child id cards, free skating, a beverage garden and an outdoor concert from 5 to 9:30 p.m.

Bands for this year’s event include Playback, Juggernaut Agenda and 14 Knuckles Later.

“We’ve got something for the whole family and a lot of the activities are free or very low cost,” she said. “It’s our way of giving back to the community that supports us all throughout the year.”

While the Independence Day celebration is going on outside, Ms. Breitbeck said the mall will also be hosting its Sizzling Summer Sales.

“Mom can come and do some shopping, while dad hangs out outside with the kids,” she said.

Following Thursday’s celebration, the mall will be open on Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Anchor store hours may vary.

Other events around the area this weekend include:

The village of Norwood will host its annual Fourth of July celebration starting with a parade at 1 p.m. Friday. The parade will be followed by a demolition derby at 2 p.m. and lawnmower races at 5 p.m. at the firemen’s field. A fireworks display will bring the evening to a close at dusk.

Mohawk International Raceway fans may also catch some fireworks Friday, following the conclusion of the races.

There will also be a Frenchie’s Chevrolet modified series, according to MIR Office Manager Dawn Mitchell.

“We do the 4th of July fireworks every year. There are plenty of family packages too for the race this weekend. That is for two adults and two children,” Ms. Mitchell said. “The races end at around 10 or 11 p.m., and the fireworks go on about 45 minutes afterwards.”

General admission for Friday’s event is $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and $10 for children 12 and under.

Family packages may be purchased for $50.
